Got Salt? Corona DWP Can Help Dispose Cost-Effectively

11/30/2011

The Brine Line removes “salts from the Watershed to keep them from degrading water quality”, and therefore increases the amount of reclaimable ground water available to the community. It is designed to carry over 30 million gallons a day of waste product, which consists of desalter concentrate and industrial wastewater, from the Santa Ana River basin to treatment plants operated by the Orange County Sanitation District, and finally to the Pacific Ocean for disposal.

For companies interested in this service, the cost is dependent on three different factors: the total volume of wastewater industry must dispose of, the concentration of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), and the concentration of Total Suspended Solids (TSS). For low concentration BOD/TSS waste, the use of the Brine Line will cost $0.05 a gallon, compared to $0.20 in the LA Basin. There are two different ways for customers to dispose of this wastewater, through direct disposal and through hauled liquid waste. Some companies will be located close enough to the Brine Line to construct a direct connection to the system. If they produce a large amount of waste, this could economically justify the construction cost. Customers located further from the system, or that generate a smaller amount of high TDS waste, can opt to dispose of it at one of the four Brine Line Collection Stations, using a commercial Waste Hauler.
